Often a sketch will inspire my glass work, and boats are an especially good subject for this transference. Water and boats are like music to me—they go straight to the heart and don't need to be thought about. The pleasure of being in a boat on the water is immediate and emotional (just ask Lyle Lovett), and the sketch brings back to me what I felt looking at all those boats jumbled up on the mud of the Thames at low tide.
